The End of the World

Today everyone is feeling great. We all met at the hotel’s breakfast buffet where we were able to try local pastries and specialties. We then started our day with an expedition briefing, where we discussed our plan for boarding the ship and departing Argentina for our polar expedition tomorrow. After the meeting the expedition crew went about their work while expedition members spent a free day exploring the town of Ushuaia, visiting museums and shops and walking along Beagle Bay.

A great meeting in the early afternoon with the TV production crews resulted in a clear decision about our direction, and we’re all very excited about the upcoming production.

We were very lucky today, because In the early afternoon local Gauchos (cowboys) gathered in the town park for a procession through the main streets of town. With their colourful woven sheepskins, gilded swords and elaborate spurs and saddles, they were as decorative as the proud, strong horses they rode. The people here in Ushuaia are very friendly, and the Gauchos were happy to have their photos taken, which was a treat for all the photographers travelling with us. After riding through the main street, they disappeared into the hills for a Sunday barbecue.

The students were impressed with the horses, but when asked if they could imagine being a Gaucho, most admitted they wouldn’t be overly keen on riding a horse.

And tomorrow is the big day! We meet at 2pm to board busses and head to the docks to board the ship and begin the next phase of our adventure. To Antarctica!
