Flights, and more flights.

Flights, and more flights.

We arrived in Ushuaia after a long series of flights today. We had a stop over in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where Dylan, Gavin, and Michael had a chance to thank the pilots of the airplane for holding the flight while the passport was found. The captains then invited them into the cockpit and the students had a chance to sit in the crew seats and get a feel for what it might be like to fly a Boeing 747. Freddy and Polly came along too, and while we were there Freddy took a little nap in one of the comfy first class seats!

We then flew to Buenos Aires and changed airports by coach to continue our journey to the southernmost city in the world. The views were incredible during the flight in, looking down on the dark Beagle Bay, and behind it the sharp rise of snowy, jagged peaks.

Arriving at the airport the television crews were waiting to talk to the students and others as soon as they collected their bags. Luckily, only one bag was lost, accidentally unloaded in Brazil. We’ve got our fingers crossed that it will make it here by Monday morning before we head out to sea!

From the airport in Ushuaia we boarded a bus into town and were told a little bit about what we were seeing. Ushuaia has 70,000 residents, which surprised many of us. Many of the homes here are brightly painted with corrugated iron sides and roofs. The overall look here is higgledy piggldy, as though planning laws here at the end of the world are ignored altogether.

We checked in to our hotel – which is very cushy – and all made our way to various restaurants for dinner. Most of us were in bed asleep by 1am.
