The Notorious Drake Passage

The Notorious Drake Passage

This morning started with a lecture from Augustine on the ozone layer, which was interesting, informative, and also extremely entertaining, which we’ve come to expect from Augustin, our on-board comedian!

Mid morning everyone gathered in the meeting room downstairs for an incredibly exciting presentation covering his multiple expeditions to the top of Everest, and most recently, his successful journey across Antarctica to the South Pole. It was so interesting for us to see the landscape and trials he experienced when the terrain was just south of our location. We all felt very motivated from Pat sharing his experiences with us. We also more thankful for the relative comfort of our expedition boat the M.V. Ushuaia.

Our morning landing was cancelled due to bad weather today. Winds are high and it was very misty so we will now batten down and prepare to sail back to Argentina, with no more time off the boat.

The captain has stopped in sheltered waters for one last calm lunch before heading into open waters of the infamous Drake Passage. We have been warned: traveling South wasn’t normally as difficult as sailing north – the way we would be.

We expect a rough crossing this evening and through the night. They’re feeding us well, because odds are a good share of us won’t be able to eat for the next few days.
