Reindeer on ice

Reindeer on ice

Good morning from Antarctica!

It’s Sunday, and the weather conditions are sunny and bright. Late last
night we pulled back to the edge of Fortuna Bay and anchored for the
night. It was one of our first clear nights, and the southern stars
were blazing! We saw satellites, meteorites – and with the help of our
resident star experts Eugene and Charlie, we could even clearly see the
clusters of stars forming other galaxies. During the night, some of us
heard ice cracking and sliding, which was exciting for those of us who
have never experienced that before.

Today we’ll visit the long beach at the back of Fortuna Bay, where we’ll
see King Penguins, more seals, and reindeer! Norwegians introduced
Reindeer to South Georgia so they would so they would have something to
hunt. Now, their populations are very high. Years ago, visitors
(especially staff from expeditions) were welcome to hunt one reindeer
while here. They are now protected, but populations are considered to
be too high, and culling within the next few years may be a possibility.
