The traverse team narrowly escaped to shore today before weather
conditions would have prevented them from making it across – lucky them!
While on traverse, Pat Falvey or Niall will ring the ship each day to
let us know how the team is doing, and to receive a weather report for
the next day.

At 8:15pm Pat contacted the ship to let us know how the traverse team
was doing. He said that the 40 knot gale forces we received down on the
sea were probably 60 knots through the Shackleton Gap, where they were
climbing today. They were bombarded with wind, experiencing very very
rough conditions. They’ve stopped and built camp just under the Trident
Tower, not daring to pass it because they have no visibility.

Visibility was very low all day, and they climbed without really seeing
anything. But there is good news too; as of 6am the weather forecast
predicts almost zero wind on the whole of South Georgia. This means
they’ll hopefully experience beautiful conditions for the majority of
the day tomorrow!

Despite the poor conditions today, Pat said everyone on the traverse
team was in great form and good spirits. We will meet them on the other
side of the island at Fortuna Bay on Sunday, if all goes according to
plan.
