After biting our nails all day about the impending stormy night, it was
reported at 11pm yesterday that in fact it had changed course. Instead,
we are expected to head straight into it at 4pm today. Well be in for
some severe rolling, but weve been instructed as to how to secure our
equipment, and how to use our backpacks or bags to secure ourselves in
one place and sleep on the floor of our berths if need be.
Today was a free day for the students, in anticipation of the storm.
But since its been fairly plain sailing today so far, we have decided
they will make 2 adsorcommercials, regarding global warming. They
will be broken down into two teams, and are commissioned to make an ad
on global warming and climate change, which will be shown on deck
tonight or tomorrow night in a mini film festival, pending weather
conditions. This will also be posted on the web for download at our
first opportunity. We all cant wait to see the finished product!
Today started with a great lecture on the geology of Antarctica by Dany
Martinioni, our Geologist from Ushuaia. Dany covered in detail the
areas where well be going. We were able to see the plate tectonics
here, where continental shelves have moved and created the topography
both underwater and above. South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula
are extension of the Andes mountain range, and there is a lot of
volcanic activity and underwater spreading where well be.
Katie OConnor started a callisthenics class today (a physical workout
session) which was a big hit with the students.
A few moments ago, we completed another mandatory meeting, where we
learned how to safely board and disembark the Zodiacs for our shore
lands, and how to stay safe on land. Well be landing tomorrow on South
Georgia!
