I couldn’t wait to get to camp and try and find out about Santa Claus. I started with Shaun – his little boy, Jack, would surely know. ‘Well Freddy, Santa lives in the North Pole – the furthest point you can find from where we are; down here there are no children, no houses, no chimneys – Santa couldn’t possibly bring you a present.’
Freddy’s eyes filled with tears. He went to Clare and asked her the same question – but she too said Santa definitely wouldn’t be coming to Antarctica. ‘Did you write to Santa and tell him what you were doing, Freddy?’
Freddy felt his face blush. He had completely forgotten – it was so long since he had left Ireland – 6 weeks ago.. And now here there was no post office, letter box or post man. He felt close to tears; there must be someway of contacting Santa!
As he lay on his sleeping bag, he had a brainwave! He would call his little cousin, Tim, ask him to write a letter to Santa from Freddy and leave his present at Tim’s house until he gets back home. He would have to be quick – only 8 days to Christmas – the postman would be busy and Santa would be frantic!
Freddy shuffled out of his sleeping bag and bounded over to Pat to ask him to use the phone – afterall, this was a sort of emergency!
