Dec 13
The rest day passed all too quickly; I had great fun teaching Polly to ski and although she was a bit awkward at first, she eventually got the hang of it! In the afternoon we decided to have a race – to see who could ski the fastest between the two tents! Unfortunately Polly took a bad fall and hurt her foot, so we decided to relax and eat lots for the evening.
As a treat, Pat told me I could use the satellite phone to call home and talk to one of my friends in the evening. I was thrilled – my first chance to speak to somebody other than the team in 32 days!
I decided to call my teacher, Ms Curtin – I figured she would have all the news from my special friends in Cloghroe and from schools all over the country.
I phoned her just before I went to bed at 8pm – I gave her all my news and then she started to tell me about Christmas – the trees, the lights, the holidays. I started to get really excited just listening to her.
Just before we said our goodbyes, she asked me would Santa be visiting me. ‘But of course,’ I replied – thinking to myself, sometimes teachers can be so silly!
I went to bed very happy – it was great to talk to home and I felt refreshed after the rest.
