Day 29.
To a special man.
Camp, Broke Evans
Broke was the son of Teddy Evans, who Tom Crean went to call a rescue for on Scotts ill fated expedition to the South Pole. He was a friend, a gentleman and a person I admired greatly. He died recently in his 80’s. He will be missed sadly. To Broke, I know your with us on our journey south. To your memory and the great chats we had at my home and of course the South Pole Inn in Anascaul. (See google map on right)
A memorial is been held there as I write. To all who attend, have a few pints for me and the team here in Antarctic. Cheers to Broke. More info on Broke’s dad Teddy Evans here
Day 29
A miserable white out and blizzard.
We couldn’t see 50 meters around us today and the contrast was terrible, it also snowed last night, which has doubled the weight drag on our sleds.
We had to operate blind man leads navigating today, as the person in front had nothing to focus on and would drift off course. So the person in second place directed the person in front. This makes for slow progress, but far better for staying on course.
After arriving at camp Broke Evans we were releived as this was the point we were navigating to, from the start of the expedition. So you can imagine the relief of hitting it after traveling 599km. Thanks to the teams good navigation, GPS and compass. 29 days of everything that Antarctic could throw at us.
After arriving at camp today, another Antarctic surprise, a blizzard has just hit us. Well at least were in from the winds and pray it passes in the next 36 hours before our rest day tomorrow finishes.
