Punta Arenas: Food for Exped - The ultimate diet!

Punta Arenas: Food for Exped - The ultimate diet!

A lot of work has gone into planning the food for this expedition. On Greenland I lost over 12kg in weight, while Shaun lost 6kg – over a period of 31 days. We simply cannot afford to allow such dramatic weight loss on an extended (55-62 days) trip.

Clare has produced the following report:-

The calculated daily calorie expenditure for manhauling a sled is estimated at approximately 6,200 – 7,500 for Pat (baseline weight 100kg) and 4,000 to 5,000 for herself (baseline weight 52kg). Jonathon and Shaun’s requirements would both be 5,000 to 6,000. Pat’s food plan allows for an intake of 5,800kcal / day; thus his average daily deficit will range from 1000 – 1500kcal and over a 50 day period his deficit will be 50,000 – 70,000 which gives a projected weight loss of 10kg. This of course assumes that he consumes his entire food pack each day – if not, his weight loss will be greater and faster.
