FREDDY’s NEWS SO FAR
Freddy’s starts skiing
13/11/07
I’ve just survived the second day here on the ice! I was so cold today, all my fur was standing on end! We were lucky it wasn’t so windy for a change.
If I bound along on all fours I can easily go faster than the others, but I like to ski, and it makes it easier for pulling my sled.
Clare has the coolest skis of all.. Some of my friends in Cloghroe National School did a great job drawing pictures on her skis – what super work! I love skiing alongside her and seeing the colourful drawings, and of course the picture of myself (!). We glide along, me humming ‘follow the yellow brick road’ in my head – only over 1100km to go!
Great job with the skis – thanks a mil to Ms Mary Curtin, the pupils at Cloghroe and to Joe O’Leary.
Freddy arrives on Antarctica
11/11/07
photo: Very Windy at Patriot Hills
Hi there everybody, just thought you might like to know where I am.. Right now I’m sitting in my tent in Antarctica, terrified!
We arrived here last night, having spent a busy week in Punta Arenas, Chile, organising all our gear for the next 60 days, which we will spend here on Antarctica, attempting to become the first Irish team to ski to the South Pole.
Since I woke this morning, the wind has been slamming and bashing our tent. I’m sitting in the corner, shivering with the cold and too scared to go outside. I watched Pat build a snow wall to protect the tent, but still the katabatic winds (really strong winds blowing from the South Pole), seem to be winning the fight.
We’re hoping to get started tomorrow – this means catching a flight to the edge of the continent, to a point called Hercules Inlet. I really hope the winds stop soon, I’d love to sneak out to my sled for my little pot of honey!
Freddy leaves school
25/10/07
We have heard that Freddy has received permission to leave school in preparation for his long journey to the South Pole. He will arrive here at the Mountain Lodge base camp on Tuesday to help Pat and Jonathon with final preparations. He will be bringing with him Clare’s skis, which were painted by the 5th Class at Cloghroe National School in Cork.
