Saturday 22nd

We woke early, 5.30am to prepare for our landing on Elephant Island.
Unfortunately it was decided not to attempt a landing as the swell was too
heavy and the fog was dense with approximately 50 meter visibility. Instead
we went on a Zodiac cruise around the Island. Despite the poor visibility we
were able to see the place where Shackleton’s crew (22 members) lived
beneath two upturned boats. The place is commemorated by a cross which was
placed there by the Commander of the Chilean navy boat that rescued the crew
in August 1919. In the afternoon the fog lifted and it was decided to go on
a Zodiac cruise to see the wildlife on the Island. It was our first sighting
of the chinstrap penguin. The chinstrap penguin has a distinctive black line
connecting their head to below the chin, hence the name. Due to the swell,
the Zodiac cruise was great fun; resembling a mini roller coaster ride.
Waking us up after our early morning rising.

We are now on our way to Esperanza which is located on the northernmost tip
of the Antaractic Peninsula.

Bye for now
