Hi Folks,
We left South Georgia yesterday in a blaze of glory after failing to
go ashore to visit the macaroni penguins at Cooper Bay. The swell was
so heavy and the beach landing area so steep that one man went
overboard so the landing was abandoned. We travelled in breathtaking
scenery up the Drygalski Fjord to where it ended in a huge glacier
which gleamed a startling white against the blue/green water. Got a
beautiful pic of a tiny shag perched on the glacier edge. As we came
back out into the open sea we were surrounded by gigantic icebergs of
every conceivable size and shape. A really incredible feeling to be
among them. Never thought I’d get this chance!
Today we are on our way to Elephant Island – a trip of two and half
days. Sitting in the large, comfortable lounge strewn with rainproofs,
wellies, camera, tripods, books diaries and coffee cups. General air
of lethargy when we hear an announcement from the bridge
" whales to starboard". Sudden frenzied dash as we were galvanised into action.!
Bit of a non event but at least it woke me up enough to get started on
my first blog.
Expedition going very well so far. Had my first queasy patch yesterday
evening after a near miraculous escape from sea sickness due to
excellent tablets. Thank you, Ann!
Feel a bit off today but sea is quite rough- Jim at least will be pleased!
Will finish here for the moment as there is only one general computer
for us to load our memory sticks on before emailing up in the office
and there are usually others waiting.
Lots of people brought their laptops for this and for downloading
their photographs.
Talk to you soon.
Love Mary
